PRESS RELEASE

October is American Pharmacists' Month

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
September 25, 2015

MONTGOMERY, AL - The Alabama Pharmacy Association (APA) wants to remind Alabamians that October is American Pharmacists' Month and encourage you to get to "Know your Pharmacists and Know your Medicines."

"APA encourages Alabama residents with questions about their medications to talk to their local pharmacist," says APA Executive Director Louise Jones. "Your local pharmacist is there to help you understand how to use your medications safely and effectively."

In the state of Alabama, there are currently more than 7,500 pharmacists licensed to practice along with more than 11,700 pharmacy technicians. Pharmacists today continually strive to expand the services they offer their patients to help in overall healthcare and medication adherence. As one of the most accessible health care providers, pharmacists play a critical role in their communities.

Your pharmacist is a valuable health care resource. They offer services such as vaccinations, patient counseling on prescriptions, smoking cessation, and disease management (i.e. Diabetes - diet, exercise, blood sugar monitoring, foot care) as well as offering helpful information on Medicare and Medicaid plans which can often be confusing to patients. Patients should feel comfortable consulting with their pharmacist before combining medicines. Drug interactions can be deadly - even over-the-counter (OTC) drugs and herbal supplements can interact with your prescriptions, so talk to your pharmacist about everything you are taking.

APA is interested in educating the public about medication safety, poison prevention, disease prevention, drug interactions, compliance and other topics related to proper use of medicine and good health. If you are interested in having someone speak to a group, please contact the APA office at 334.271.4222.

The Alabama Pharmacy Association (APA) is a nonprofit professional organization with over 2,700 members statewide. APA offers continuing education programs for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, and members take a leading role in lobbying for pharmacy at the state and national level. The APA was established in 1881 and is the oldest professional organization for pharmacy in the state. APA members represent all practices of pharmacy and are committed to their profession and their patients.
