Cary "Dale" Johnson of Boaz Inducted Into Alabama Pharmacy Hall of Fame

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

July 1, 2026

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – On June 8, 2026, Dale Johnson of Boaz was inducted into the Alabama Pharmacy Hall of Fame at the Alabama Pharmacy Association’s (APA) 145th Annual Convention and Trade Show at The Lodge at Gulf State Park in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

Dale Johnson was born on June 28, 1947, in Gadsden, Alabama, to Alfred and Eleanor Johnson. The oldest of three children, he was raised in the small town of Sardis City, where his father taught high school history and his mother devoted herself to caring for their family.

When Dale graduated from high school in 1965, he never imagined he would one day become a farmer, participate in more than 20 medical mission trips to the Dominican Republic, Tanzania, and communities across the United States, or help build Boaz Discount Drugs into a business celebrating more than fifty years of service. He certainly never imagined he would become a pharmacist.

Plan A after high school was to enter a management program at the local Goodyear plant, but he was not accepted. Plan B was an application to the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. Before he could pursue that opportunity, Gadsden State offered him an athletic scholarship. A year later, when his acceptance to the Naval Academy arrived, Dale chose instead to remain at Gadsden State and continue playing basketball.

During his junior year, he transferred to Auburn University, took an aptitude test and scored highly in pharmacy. What began as a simple assessment soon became a calling. Dale discovered both his passion and purpose, graduating from Auburn’s School of Pharmacy in 1969.

While his career path may not have been immediately clear, one thing certainly was — his interest in Donna Bone after a blind date to an Auburn football game. The evening ended with their first kiss in front of Samford Hall, marking the beginning of a lifelong partnership.

Dale began his pharmacy career at Gadsden’s former Holy Name of Jesus Hospital while also working part-time at Boaz Discount Drugs for Bill Cobb. Although trained as a hospital pharmacist, Dale realized he desired a closer connection with patients. In 1972, he joined Cobb full-time, and just one year later became a full partner. At the time, the pharmacy operated from its downtown location. In the years that followed, the business expanded with a second site inside Piggly Wiggly before eventually combining operations into its current Mill Street location.

Dale Johnson’s commitment to serving others extends far beyond the walls of his pharmacy. Over the years, he has served with the Sardis City Volunteer Fire Department, been PTA President at both Carlisle Elementary and Sardis High School, served on the Sardis City Water and Sewer Board, coached Dixie Youth Baseball, and participated in the Sardis Athletic Club. He has also served as both a volunteer and board member for Shepherd’s Cove Hospice and as Chairman of the Board for First Bank of Boaz and the American Pharmacy Cooperative, Inc. (APCI).

Beyond his local community, Dale has remained deeply committed to Auburn University and the Harrison College of Pharmacy, where he continues to mentor and support pharmacy students through clinical education and professional guidance.

Among his many honors are the Heart of Hospice Award, McKesson’s 2009 HealthMart Pharmacy of the Year, induction into the Legends of Etowah County Athletics, and the prestigious 2025 Bowl of Hygeia Award.

Dale Johnson is recognized as an exemplary leader in both the pharmacy profession and his community. Working tirelessly in what he calls “his mission field,” he has built a successful independent pharmacy centered on compassionate patient care and unparalleled service. As both a mentor and role model, he has influenced generations of pharmacists, inspiring countless individuals to serve their own communities with integrity and compassion.

Dale and Donna continue to find great joy in their children and grandchildren. Together, they live on a 200-acre farm where they raise apple trees and Angus cattle. For Dale, the farm offers peace, perspective, and restoration — a place to slow down, appreciate God’s creation, and recharge away from the pharmacy.

And that Plan B he once considered — the Naval Academy? Dale still occasionally wonders how different life might have been had he gone to Annapolis. Vietnam was rapidly escalating at the time. “I had classmates who lost their lives there,” Dale recalls. “I had many friends who were wounded, many carrying scars for the rest of their lives. I will always be grateful for what they sacrificed. My life could have been very different.”

Fortunately for countless patients, students, colleagues, and communities, Dale’s life took another path. Like a stone cast into water, the impact of his work has created ripples extending far beyond the walls of his pharmacy. Through both his words and his example, Dale has taught generations to love God, serve others selflessly, and care deeply for all people — the true mark of a caregiver, mentor, and servant leader.

The Alabama Pharmacy Association is a nonprofit professional organization with over 3,000 members statewide. The APA offers continuing education programs for pharmacists and pharmacy technicians, and members take a leading role in lobbying for pharmacy at the state and national level. The APA was established in 1881 and is the oldest professional organization for pharmacy in the state.
Governor Ivey Signs the Community Pharmacy Relief Act Into Law

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
April 15, 2025

MONTGOMERY, Ala., -- Today, Governor Kay Ivey signed Senate Bill 252, the Community Pharmacy Relief Act, into law. The Alabama Pharmacy Association (APA) voiced gratitude to Governor Ivey, the Alabama Legislature, and all the pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, and patients across the state who mobilized to call, email, or visit their lawmakers to express their support for this important legislation.

The new law will limit the power of the pharmacy middlemen known as Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs). Alabama’s community pharmacies have been closing at an alarming rate, with 10 closing just since the beginning of 2025 due to the business practices of PBMs which reimbursed community pharmacies at unsustainably low rates, sometimes below their cost of dispensing a medication.

Massive grassroots efforts across the state are credited with the win. “We believe that several bottom-up movements this year were the reason for the success of SB252,” said APA Chief Executive Officer Louise Jones. “Among them, the Pharmacy Walkout for PBM Reform helped pharmacists spark conversations with patients that started a barrage of calls to the Statehouse.” More than 120 pharmacies participated in the walkout, making it an unprecedented event in the state.

The legislation was passed unanimously by both the Alabama Senate and the Alabama House of Representatives. Senator Billy Beasley, bill sponsor and retired pharmacist, had this to say after final approval, “This has been a win for the people of Alabama. It’s been a huge win for the community pharmacists in the state of Alabama who just want to be able to go to work, make a living and take care of their patients.”

Representative Philip Rigsby, who carried the bill in the House and is himself an independent pharmacist, was instrumental in pushing the legislation through that chamber. “It’s a big win for not only pharmacies that are able to stay open and take care of those patients, but a big win for Alabamians because they can continue to go to that pharmacy that’s taken care of generations,” Rigsby said.
