Call for APA Annual Award Nominations
Take advantage of the opportunity to submit the names of your peers who are deserving of recognition for their dedication to the profession of pharmacy and for the service they provide the citizens in their community.
- Nominations can be submitted by any APA member in good standing unless otherwise noted in specific award qualifications.
- Please provide a letter of support for each award nominee describing detailed information about the candidate and why you feel they should be considered, include a current CV if possible.
- Mail this information to the APA office at 1211 Carmichael Way, Montgomery, AL 36106 or FAX to 334/271-5423.
- All award nominations must be received by the APA office on or before March 31.

Bowl of Hygeia Award:
A desire to encourage pharmacists to take active roles in the affairs of their respective communities prompted the A.H. Robins Company to establish the Bowl of Hygeia award in 1958. Since that time, sponsorship of the award has changed but the purpose
has remained the same—the recognition of excellence. It is presented annually in each of the United States, as well as the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the ten provinces of Canada. The Alabama Pharmacy Association is responsible for the
selection of the Alabama recipient. It is awarded in recognition of the recipients’ long-time involvement in activities that improve their communities and their patients’ health. The Bowl of Hygeia was first presented in Alabama in 1963.
Qualifications:
- The recipient must be a pharmacist, licensed in the state of Alabama.
- The recipient must be living. Awards are not presented posthumously.
- The recipient has not been a previous recipient of the award.
- The recipient is not currently serving, nor has he/she served within the immediate past two years as an officer of the association in other than an ex-officio capacity or its awards committee.
- The recipient has compiled an outstanding record of community service, which apart from his/her specific identification as a pharmacist, reflects well on the profession.
- The recipient shall be a member of APA in good standing who has been a member for a minimum of four years.
- Members serving on the APA Executive Committee shall not be eligible recipients.

Thomas “Lester” White APA Good Government Pharmacist of the Year Award:
This award is presented to an APA member who actively contributes to the community through their voluntary involvement in the political process to advance the pharmacy profession. It is named in honor of Lester White who served as a legislative consultant
to APA until his death in 2000. Given annually, it was first presented in 2001.
Qualifications:
- The recipient must be an APA member in good standing.
- APA Staff members, lobbyists, and state or federal officials are not eligible.
- The government affairs activity in which the nominee participated must have raised pharmacy’s awareness of the political process, improved the pharmacy profession and the political process, as well as improved service and education to the patients
and relations with elected officials. The recipient of this award is selected by the APA Political Action Committee from nominations submitted.
- Members serving on the APA Executive Committee shall not be eligible recipients.

Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award:
This award recognizes leadership and service to the profession by a pharmacist early in their career. It is sponsored by Pharmacists Mutual and is given annually. It was first presented in 1987.
Qualifications:
- Licensed to practice pharmacy for nine years or less.
- Licensed to practice pharmacy in Alabama.
- Member of APA in good standing and a member for a minimum of two years.
- Participation in national pharmacy associations, professional programs, state association activities, and/or community service. Sponsored by Pharmacists Mutual Insurance.
- Members serving on the APA Executive Committee shall not be eligible recipients.

APA J. Wayne Staggs Distinguished Service Award:
First presented in 1989 as the APA Distinguished Service Award, this award was renamed in 2004 in memory of J. Wayne Staggs. Its purpose is to recognize exceptional leadership and devoted service to APA. It is presented annually.
Qualifications:
- The recipient must be an APA member in good standing for a minimum of two years.
- The recipient must have actively participated in the activities of APA.
- The recipient must have provided outstanding service to the association.
- Members serving on the APA Executive Committee shall not be eligible recipients.

Pharmacy Technician of the Year Award:
This award recognizes dedication to the profession by a pharmacy technician. First presented in 2007, it is given annually.
Qualifications:

The recipient must be an APA member in good standing.

The recipient must demonstrate excellence in performance of technician duties.

The recipient must be nominated by a pharmacist.

The recipient must be licensed as a pharmacy technician in Alabama.

Members serving on the APA Executive Committee shall not be eligible recipients.

Excellence in Innovation Award – formerly called the “Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award”:
First presented in 1993, this award recognizes innovative pharmacy practice resulting in improved patient care. It emphasizes the very important role that pharmacy has in providing patient care and counseling in a manner that no one else can. Sponsored
by Upsher Smith Laboratories, Inc. it is presented annually.
Qualifications:

Nominations will be solicited from pharmacists around the state of Alabama, wholesalers, pharmacy organizations and schools of pharmacy.

The recipient must be licensed to practice pharmacy in Alabama.

The recipient must be a member of the APA in good standing.

The recipient must be actively practicing pharmacy at the time of their nomination.
-
The nomination must include a complete description of the pharmacist’s practice with an explanation of how they have improved patient care. Testimonials may be submitted.

Members serving on the APA Executive Committee shall not be eligible recipients.

InfluenceRx Award:
Established in late 2021 and named in 2022, this award recognizes outstanding contributions by APA members who have positively impacted the pharmacy profession through media.
Qualifications:
- Must be an APA member in good standing.
- Must not have received this award in the past five years.
- Shall have raised the public's awareness level through use of mediums such as social media, video, blogs, podcasts, digital newsletters, websites, presentations, radio, and news outlets regarding the pharmacy profession, pharmacy issues/topics, or
pharmacy organizations.
- Nominations can be submitted by any APA member in good standing, wholesalers, pharmacy organizations, schools of pharmacy, and members of the media.
- Members serving on the APA Executive Committee shall not be eligible recipients.

Faculty Member of the Year Award:
This award was established to recognize outstanding contributions and efforts of a faculty member in raising awareness among student pharmacists and fellow faculty about the importance of continued involvement in state professional associations. First
presented in 2009, this award is given annually.
Qualifications:

Must be an APA member in good standing. Exceptions may be made for non-pharmacist faculty dependant on qualifications of nominee.

Promotes not only academic achievement but also leadership qualities at the local, state and national level to student pharmacists.
-
Has been responsive to the needs of student pharmacists and has promoted their advancement within the profession of pharmacy.
-
Has made significant contributions to the growth of APA student pharmacist membership and has mentored students on the importance of professional development.
-
Must not have received this award within the past five years.

This award will not be given posthumously.

Must be currently employed by an Alabama college of pharmacy as a full-time faculty member in the school of pharmacy.

Members serving on the APA Executive Committee shall not be eligible recipients.

Mitchel C. Rothholz President’s Award:
The award is given to an APA member other than an officer for their distinguished and unselfish service to the Association. The recipient is selected by the APA President. It was named in honor of Mitch Rothholz who served as the APA Executive Director
from 1989 through June 1994. First presented in 1996, it is given annually.
Qualifications:
- The recipient must be an APA member in good standing.
- Members serving on the APA Executive Committee shall not be eligible recipients.

Joseph O. Dean, Jr. Student Professionalism Award:
This award is presented to a student enrolled in the professional curriculum of the Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy who has exemplified leadership and professionalism. It was named in honor of Joe Dean who served as Dean of the McWhorter
School of Pharmacy from 1991 to 2006. First presented in 2007, it is given annually.
Qualifications:
- This award will be presented annually to a student from the Samford University McWhorter School of Pharmacy.
- The award will recognize a student leader who demonstrates in his/her school and other pharmacy-related endeavors a high level of professionalism.
- The vision of the recipient for future pharmacist functions and healthcare programs is an important consideration or trait for consideration for this award.
- The leadership roles of candidates may be in student pharmacy organizations or demonstrated through active participation in other leadership positions.
- The recipient must be an APA member in good standing.
- The award will include a plaque recognizing the student. In addition, a donation of $500 will be made to the APA Student Scholarship Fund in honor of the recipient.
- The recipient for the award will be selected by the APA Nominations/Awards Committee from the nominees received.

R. Lee Evans Student Professionalism Award:
This award is presented to a student enrolled in the professional curriculum of the Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy who has exemplified leadership and professionalism. It was named in honor of Lee Evans who served as Dean of the Harrison
School of Pharmacy from 1994 to 2017. First presented in 2016, it is given annually.
Qualifications:
- This award will be presented annually to a student from the Auburn University Harrison School of Pharmacy.
- The award will recognize a student leader who demonstrates in his/her school and other pharmacy-related endeavors a high level of professionalism.
- The vision of the recipient for future pharmacist functions and healthcare programs is an important consideration or trait for consideration for this award.
- The leadership roles of candidates may be in student pharmacy organizations or demonstrated through active participation in other leadership positions.
- The recipient must be an APA member in good standing.
