As of January 1, 2020, ALBOP now requires new technicians to complete a board-approved training. No worries - we've got you covered!

APA has developed an ALBOP-approved training program that meets the competencies and requirements outlined in Alabama Board of Pharmacy Policy 19-003.

Background
In 2019 the Alabama Board of Pharmacy amended rule 680-X-2-.14 (The Role of Technicians in Pharmacies in Alabama) to establish training requirements for all pharmacy technicians receiving their initial registration on or after January 1, 2020.  The requirement does not apply to technicians licensed in Alabama prior to January 1, 2020.

All newly licensed technicians are required to complete a Board-approved training program within the first 6 months after their registration and to submit evidence of completion to the Board within 10 days of completing the program.  Both the pharmacy and the technician should keep proof of the training on file for a period of two years.  The Board may issue a fine of up to $1000 to the pharmacy and revoke the registration of a technician for failure to comply with the new rule.

Adjustment to 6 month completion requirement due to COVID-19
The Alabama Board of Pharmacy will allow any technician who initially registered on or after January 1, 2020 through the end of the state of emergency, an extension on completion of the required training until December 31, 2020.

 

Frequently Asked Questions: 

Do new technicians licensed since January 1, 2020 need to complete all five of these modules as LIVE credits? No. New technicians must complete all five modules but there is no requirement they be “Live” credits. The training requirements can be met through completion of the APA modules as live webinars or recorded non-live webinars.

If a technician misses the webinars when they are presented as live programs, can they still get live credit hours? Live credit hours are only available for those completing the modules on the dates they are presented as live programming. All modules will be recorded and available to watch for non-live credit after the initial presentation.

For those completing the bundle, is there a specific order in which the modules must be completed? Outside of the initial presentations which are scheduled to occur in June, webinars will be available to “binge-watch” back to back, or to watch whenever is convenient. The State Board of Pharmacy has extended the training completion deadline for those licensed during the COVID state of emergency to December 31, 2020.

Can a technician who was licensed prior to January 1, 2020 register for specific individual modules only? Yes. APA is providing this training as a bundle or individual modules; both live webinars (initial presentations) and non-live recorded webinars.

What do I need to do after completing all 5 modules of the pharmacy technician training program?
APA will send certificates of completion that indicate you completed all five modules and passed all assessments. 

Once you receive the certificate from APA you should go to the Alabama Board of Pharmacy’s website to print the Technician Training Verification form.  Go to www.albop.com, click on “Applications and Forms”, and choose Technician Training Verification Form.  This document should be completed by the technician and the supervising pharmacist. 

Once the document is completed it should be submitted to Ashley Huntley at the Board of Pharmacy either by mail or email.
